Periyar National Park

Periyar National ParkPeriyar National Park is one of the oldest wildlife sanctuaries in India. It is located in the high mountains of the Western Ghats which lies in the districts of Idukki and Pathanamthitta in the state of the Kerala at the border of Tamil Nadu.

Periyar is a national park as well as a protected tiger reserve. Periyar National Park is spreads over 350 sq kms. Its total area is about 778 km sq. and located about 1800 m above sea level.

Periyar was considered a sanctuary in 1934 and in 1978 Tiger Project reserve in the state of the Kerala. In 1982 it was declared as a National Park. Periyar National Park is considered the most exciting biosphere reserves in the country with large variety of flora and fauna.

Periyar National Park has leopard, wild dog, barking deer, mouse deer and variety of snakes and birds which includes darter, ospreys, grey heron, ibis, cormorant, kingfishers, kites hill mynas, parakeets etc. Marshy grasslands, rolling and steep hills are also present here.

Four types of primates are found at Periyar National Park like as rare lion tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, common langur and bonnet macaque. Other attractions at Periyar National Park are Kumily Town, Cradomom Hills and Boat Cruises. The best season to visit Periyar wildlife sanctuary is from the months of October and June.
