Kanha National Park

Kanha National ParkKanha National Park is the most spectacular and protected wildlife reserves of the world. Kanha National Park is located in Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh. It is a part of Project Tiger. The 1,945 sq. km National Park has been compared to N'Gorongoro National Park of Tanzania.

In 1930 Kanha Park area was divided into two sanctuaries, Hallon of 250 sq. km and Banjar of 300 sq. km. Kanha National Park was established on 1st June 1955.

There are two gates for entrance into the forest. The Kisli gate is best accessible from Jabalpur and the second gate is Mukki. The Kisli gate stops at village Khatia which comes inside the buffer area.

Kanha National Park has some 200 species of birds. Watchers should station themselves in the hills, where the mixed and bamboo forests harbor many species and in the grassy forest clearings.

The major feature of this region's interesting topography is the horseshoe shape valley and the whole park area is surrounded by the spurs of the Mekal. The Surpan River meanders through Kanha's central Maidans, grasslands that cover the extensive plateau.

Kanha National Park Provides the inspiration to Rudyard Kipling For his famous novel "Jungle Book". The climate of Kanha Park is tropical. The temperature, depending on the season, ranges from 0 degrees in the winters to 48 degrees in the summers. It is closed from July to mid November due to monsoon.
