Indira Gandhi National Park

Indira Gandhi National ParkIndira Gandhi National Park is located in the Anamalai range of Western Ghats, in Tamil Nadu. It was formerly known as Anamalai Sanctuary. It is spread over 9.58 sq. kms. of area.

Indira Gandhi National Park has various wild fauna like elephant, gaur, tiger, panther, pangolin, green pigeon, civet cat etc. It has large number of crocodiles in Amaravathy reservoir in Anamalai.

There are other attractions at Indira Gandhi National Park are Karain Shoal, Anaikunthi shoal, Grass hills, waterfalls, groves, teak forests, estates, dams and reservoirs.

A large number of birds have their habitation here, which includes Green Pigeon, Tickell's Flower Pecker, Rufus Wood Pecker, Rose Ringed Parakeet, Black Eagle, Racquet Tailed Drongo, Black Headed Oriole, Paradise Fly-catcher, Whistling Thrush, Great Indian, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Fairy Bluebird, and Emerald Dove.

The evergreen forests in the sanctuary include moist and deciduous forests. Apart from the presence of tropical tree species like teak and rosewood, other popular varieties include Combretum Ovalifolium, Dispyros nilagrica, Gymnopteris Contaimirans, Habebarai reriflora, Polypodum pleroupus, Alsophila, Bulbophyllum sp, Lasianthus uenuloses, Angiopterris Erectra, Gnetum Ula, Impaliens Elegans, Lycopodium cernum, Ranunculus reniformis and Osmunda Regulis.

The best times to visit the park are from January to February and avoid visiting from June to August. Private vehicles are allowed in the park.
