Buddha Purnima

Budha Purnima Buddha Purnima is also known as Buddha Jayanti. Buddha Purnima is the birth anniversary of Buddha. Buddha Purnima is most important festival of Budhists which is celebrated with great enthusiasm.

Mahavir Buddha considered as the last avatar of Vishno. Buddhism was originally a sect within the Hindu way of life. Its originator had the personal name of Siddharta, and the surname Gautama.

He belonged to the Sakya clan of the Kshatriya or warrior caste. He married and had a son, Rahula. But after some years he left his parents, wife and child. The king, his father, had three palaces built for him. Gautama left everything at age of 14 to find, in his own words, "the incomparable security of a 'Nirvana' free from birth and endless reincarnation."

On this day the followers of Buddha bathe and wear only white clothes. They gather in their Viharas for worship and give alms to monks. Prayers, sermons, and non-stop recitation of Buddhist scriptures resonate in monasteries and viharas.

People light lamps around the trees and decorate with garlands and coloured flags. They reaffirm their faith in the five principles called 'Panch Sheel'. The five principles are not to take life, not to steal, not to lie, not to imbibe liquor or other intoxicants and not to commit adultery. On this day, the Buddhists free birds from cages, distribute fruit and clothes to the sick and refrain from eating meat.
